V.L. RAINEY
THE RECTIFIERS
What if everything you knew was a lie?

When Evelyn got arrested, she had no idea she would be serving her time in a research facility in California being tortured. Everything seems normal at first— until she starts having strange hallucinations while being experimented on. Her only allies are another inmate whose paranoia could get them all killed, and an employee of the research facility who tries to help her adjust to her new life. She soon discovers that everything she’s ever known is just a centuries-old lie.
Esther walks over to the computer and presses a button, and pain courses through my skull. I let out a cry. I want to rip them off my head. It feels like there are tiny metal wires piercing through the bone of my skull and swimming into the crevices of my brain. It is the most unique pain I have ever felt. I would do anything right now to make it stop. I just want it to get out of my brain! I bring my hands up to my head and gingerly touch the electrodes, but someone, I can’t see who, comes and yanks my hands forcefully off my head and straps them down onto the arms of the chair. I’m completely helpless now.
